Afternoon/Evening Library Assistant

Join us as we upgrade into a new library in Barrington! We’re looking for an Afternoon/Evening Library Assistant who is customer service focused, detail-oriented, able to multitask and change gears at a moment’s notice with tact, courtesy, and a sense of humor.

The primary duty of the Library Assistant is to check materials in and out; staff the circulation desk including answering phones, taking in fees, and interacting with patrons to provide assistance as needed; and re-shelve materials. This position has a range of 20-24 hours per week with daytime hours, two evenings per week, and every other Saturday. 

Due to the physical nature of this job, applicants should be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. frequently, carry/lift 25-50 lbs. occasionally and carry/lift over 50 lbs. infrequently, push/pull book carts, reach at, above or below the shoulder on a daily basis, grasp and handle items, be able to bend, squat, crouch, twist, balance, kneel and climb as needed to shelve items.

HS/GED required, Associate’s degree preferred. Prior library experience a plus. Excellent customer service, basic computer skills and organizational skills required.

Anticipated Hours: Monday/Thursday/Friday: 2PM – 6PM, Tuesday/Wednesday: 4PM – 8PM, Saturday: 9:30AM-3PM.

Social Media & Technology Library Assistant

Do you enjoy creating digital content for websites, social media and newsletters? Do you have a knack learning new technology and sharing it with others? Do you have ideas on how to increase community engagement at the library? Are you skilled in creating eye-catching flyers and posts using software programs? We are looking for a person to join our staff that is excited about providing excellent service to our patrons and providing digital content for our library. This position is 34 hours per week with evenings and some Saturdays required.

Some Major Duties:

  • Monitor and maintain the Library’s website and social media outlets for currency, functionality, consistency, and presentation; create online forms and documents as necessary.
  • Offer patrons basic help with library related technology devices, software and apps.
  • Schedule adult educational and entertaining programs and events that meet the needs and vision of the Library.
  • Create signs, posters, flyers, and other promotional materials for all library programming and events.

Minimum Qualifications: Associate or Bachelor degree preferred; substantial relevant experience will be considered in lieu of the college degree. Sufficient experience and understanding of basic library and marketing principles relevant to the major duties of the job. Familiarity with multiple software applications (such as Canva, MailChimp, Microsoft products, Adobe products) and mobile devices (smartphones, ereaders, tablets) is essential.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position:

The Social Media & Technology Library Assistant must exhibit the following:

  • Ability to design and create print and online media publicity (i.e. website, signs, social media, brochures, etc.).
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to learn and adapt to new software programs
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage and execute multiple projects.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Comfortable facilitating programs and speaking in front of an audience.
  • Ability to engage community, patrons and staff in promotion of the Library.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, patrons and volunteers.
