New Hampshire’s Cultural Diversity

Come and view her wonderful exhibit of photographs and hear her speak about her project.

Recently, Becky partnered with the NH Charitable Foundation to start the Different Roots, Common Dreams Scholarship Fund to help refugees and other immigrants complete a four-year undergraduate degree.

Becky holds a Certificate in Photography from the NH Institute of Art, and has studied photography throughout the Northeast. In past work she was a research ecologist and university professor. She holds masters and doctoral degrees in wildlife ecology. For more, visit www.DifferentRootsNH.com.

A donation can will be passed after her talk and all proceeds will go to this scholarship fund.  The library will also have a copy of her book for patrons to check out.

But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.
Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

How can individual citizens become involved? Why does it matter?
These and other questions regarding NH's state government will be discussed in a presentation by former State Representative Ken Grossman (2012-2014). Although Ken did serve as a member of a party, this is a nonpartisan informational presentation, and no views favoring a party will be expressed.

Location:  Library Meeting Room

Description:  Many people dream of escaping modern life. Most will never act on it—but in 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight did just that when he left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another person for the next twenty-seven years.

Drawing on extensive interviews with Knight himself, journalist Michael Finkel shows how Knight lived in a tent in a secluded encampment, developing ingenious ways to store provisions and stave off frostbite during the winters. A former alarm technician, he stealthily broke into nearby cottages for food, books, and supplies, taking only what he needed but sowing unease in a community plagued by his mysterious burglaries. Since returning to the world, he has faced unique challenges—and compelled us to reexamine our assumptions about what makes a good life. By turns riveting and thought-provoking, The Stranger in the Woods gives us a deeply moving portrait of a man determined to live his own way.

Location:  Library Meeting Room
Contact:
Description:  This is how a family keeps a secret…and how that secret ends up keeping them.

This is how a family lives happily ever after…until happily ever after becomes complicated.

This is how children change…and then change the world.

This is Claude. He’s five years old, the youngest of five brothers, and loves peanut butter sandwiches. He also loves wearing a dress, and dreams of being a princess.

When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl.

Rosie and Penn want Claude to be whoever Claude wants to be. They’re just not sure they’re ready to share that with the world. Soon the entire family is keeping Claude’s secret. Until one day it explodes.

Laurie Frankel's This Is How It Always Is is a novel about revelations, transformations, fairy tales, and family. And it’s about the ways this is how it always is: Change is always hard and miraculous and hard again, parenting is always a leap into the unknown with crossed fingers and full hearts, children grow but not always according to plan. And families with secrets don’t get to keep them forever.

New members always welcomed!  If you need a copy of th ebook, please contact the library at 664-9715 and we will order one via inter-library loan.

Brown Bag Lunch Book Group Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat.

How Does New Hampshire Government Work?
Wednesday, April 25th at 6PM at the library

How are decisions made in Concord and how do they affect our lives in Barrington? Who has the most power? Is it the governor or the legislature?

How can individual citizens become involved? Why does it matter?
These and other questions regarding NH's state government will be discussed in a presentation by former State Representative Ken Grossman (2012-2014). Although Ken did serve as a member of a party, this is a nonpartisan informational presentation, and no views favoring a party will be expressed.

Bring your questions: what would you like to know? Confused about how a bill makes its way through the process? Want to know how best to contact representatives? Ask Anything!

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM
Brown Bag Book Discussion Group: Stranger in the Woods Many people dream of escaping modern life.

Brown Bag Book Discussion Group: "This Is How It Always Is" by Frankel This is how a family keeps a secret…and how that secret ends up keeping them.

Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
