1940 CENSUS NOW AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC

The 1940 Census is available online

Click on the Get Started button to begin searching more than 132 million names!  On the first day of its release the website received over 22.5 million hits – which slowed everything down.  Before you start searching on this site it is important to know that it is not name-indexed yet.

You will need to know the Enumeration District (ED) that your ancestor lived in (which is most likely different from a previous census).  You can do the tutorial to find your enumeration district.  The tutorial will ask you questions that will help determine the ED by narrowing down the address where they lived in 1940. If you already know the address click on the Unified ED Finder button.
